...she joined the chorus of the sea-doomed and sung the song that only sirens do, thrashing her tail and howling for herself.
‘Until we can understand the assumptions in which we are drenched we cannot know ourselves.’ – Adrienne Rich
The Mermaids is a devised work, a reimagining and reclamation of Hans Christian Andersen's The Little Mermaid, based on verbatim retellings from female-identifying teenagers. It is not an adaptation of The Little Mermaid. Rather, we will use the story as a framework to explore wider myths about women and how these impact our perspectives on gendered behaviour.
Will will work with teenagers from the community, asking them questions about The Little Mermaid. When they first heard it, what they think about it and whether or not they believe stories like it have impacted them. Their interpretations of the story will create the basis of the show.
Each night, a different audience member will be invited to join the performance, guided through a pair of headphones. In asking an audience member to perform, we are challenging them to navigate a strange new world, just as the little mermaid does. This blurring of the spectator/performer boundary allows us to explore the idea that we are all storytellers, responsible for the narratives about womanhood we tell and internalise.
