...she joined the chorus of the sea-doomed and sung the song that only sirens do, thrashing her tail and howling for herself.

Sirens, mermaids, witches; do we still live in the shadows of these myths? Do these stories of female hybrids and monsters still have power? What do they say to young women coming of age in this world? We will use the framework of this fairy tale to create a layered world that delves into the stories and myths we still tell about women.
The Mermaid is a devised work, reinventing The Little Mermaid, based on verbatim retellings from teenage girls. It's about the construction of stories, and an inversion of who normally controls this narrative.
This work will be made by a group of intergenerational women; a director, dramaturg and three performers. It is a theatrically ambitious piece that combines adaptation, verbatim and participatory theatre. It will be based on a series of workshops run at Williamstown and Northcote High Schools with 15-17 year old female identifying students in 2018/2019. The information we gather from these workshops will form the basis for this project.
